110. Creating Momentum in an Instant

As June comes to an end, it can feel like life, work, and motherhood have taken over, leaving you wondering how it’s already mid-year and what happened to your plans. If you’re realizing that the year is halfway over and you haven’t made as much progress on your goals as you hoped, this episode is for you. Maybe you wanted this to be the year you started that business, or maybe you wanted to stop feeling stuck and overwhelmed.

In this episode, I talk about how creating momentum can happen in an instant. I explore how one small, intentional action can set off a domino effect that moves multiple areas of your life forward. Waiting to “figure everything out” can keep us stuck, but making a deliberate shift, even a tiny one, can spark clarity, confidence, and forward motion. I share how small, actionable choices can create meaningful change in both your business and personal life.

If you’ve been feeling behind or unsure about your next steps, this conversation will help you see that momentum doesn’t require sweeping changes or a perfect plan. By embracing small, intentional actions and shifting your mindset, you can start moving forward today. You’ll hear how one decision can trigger progress, break patterns of hesitation, and help you feel lighter, more focused, and ready to take the next step in creating the results you want this year.

If you're realizing that the year is halfway over and you've barely touched the goals you set for yourself, this episode is for you. Maybe you wanted this to be the year that you actually started that business, or maybe you wanted this to be the year that you stopped feeling so stuck.

Welcome to How to Quit Your Job, the podcast for moms ready to ditch the nine-to-five and build a life and business they love. I’m your host, Jenna Rykiel. Let’s go.

Hi mom friends. You might have promised yourself that by now, June, something would be different, and instead, motherhood happened, life happened, work happened, kids happened, summer is happening. And now you might be looking at your calendar and wondering, if you're like me, how is it June already?

I know that for some of you, that means you're halfway through a year that you wanted to be different. You wanted to create different results this year, and that might make you feel a little behind, a little lost, maybe even a little ashamed that you haven't taken action or done things the way you thought you would when you were thinking about it at the beginning of the year. And I want to offer you something that I hope feels like relief today.

Change can happen in an instant. I want you to just sit with that. Now, of course, starting a business takes time. You're probably not going to leave your job overnight. You're not going to build something sustainable in a weekend. But the beautiful thing is that momentum can happen in an instant, and momentum is what leads to change. You can go from feeling stuck, resentful, and dreading each day to feeling like possibility exists again.

It truly takes one action sometimes or one thought that shifts, and suddenly things feel different. It's a domino effect. And the amazing thing is that the circumstance doesn't have to change. What I mean by that is you can still have the same job, the same loaded, busy calendar, the same responsibilities, the same kids asking you for snacks every five minutes and then not eating their dinner. But suddenly you have possibility again because you have direction. And that possibility, that direction, that breeds hope.

And hope changes the way we show up. Direction, clarity, that changes the way we make decisions. And that, I promise, all of those things can happen in an instant. You can go from feeling stuck and lost to feeling aligned and clear in an instant.

I'm getting ready to teach a free training, actually, in a couple days, if you're catching this live, if you're one of my followers that catches this live. And if you're not, definitely follow the podcast so you can catch these episodes as they're live. But I'm getting ready for that training, and it's been reminding me of this lesson over and over again because we think we have to change everything before we can feel better. We think we need to put in our two weeks' notice to feel better. We think we need to make money in the business, find clients, and figure everything out, and then we'll be happy. Then we'll finally be less resentful. But I've coached enough moms to know that you can feel better long before any of those things happen.

In fact, that's exactly what keeps us going. Nobody builds a business because they wake up one day and suddenly have all the answers. They build it because they start collecting little moments, little instances that remind them to keep going, that they're capable, that they can do this. Little actions build momentum.

Those are things that can happen today, right now, in an instant. We don't have to wait for an entire month or week or six months for change to happen. Sometimes all it takes is one conversation, one coffee chat, maybe one person saying, oh, that's a great idea. You'd actually be really good at that. One email to somebody in your network, one brainstorming session with your little notebook where you let yourself get excited. One webinar that reminds you're not crazy for wanting something different, wanting something more.

Those moments matter, and they can happen quickly. Those moments create momentum, and momentum has this incredible way of changing how we think about ourselves, how we make decisions, how we do things. Once you start moving, you stop seeing yourself as someone who is stuck. You start seeing yourself as someone who is building, who is capable of building. You start seeing yourself as someone who takes action. And that's where so much of the magic shows up. That's when the idea that's been living in your head starts to become real.

So if you're feeling a little down because we're halfway through the year, that's okay. Maybe you haven't looked at your goals in months. Maybe you've just spent the last six months surviving. Maybe you've spent them, more realistically, taking care of everyone else, and I get that. But I also know that the next six months do not have to look like the first six months. And I want you to know too, you do not have to make up for lost time. You do not have to work twice as hard to create change this year. You do not have to punish yourself for being halfway through the year without the actions or results you wanted. You just have to decide that you're doing this and take one action. Create momentum, tip the domino.

Before today is over, I want you to do one thing that future you will thank you for. Send the email, reach out to that one person, sign up for the workshop, open the notebook and dream. Spend 30 minutes dreaming about what you actually want or how this business could come to life. Because I have a feeling that one day you're going to look back and realize that this wasn't necessarily the day that everything changed, but it was the day everything started changing. And that happens in an instant. Starting, changing, happens in an instant. We don't need six months to make it happen.

And what you'll find is that as soon as you tip that first domino, there's going to be compounding change that happens that's going to feel super exciting. People in your life are going to notice the changes in you. When you have the right tools and the right support and you're starting to take action, which all of those things can happen in an instant, they are all instant decisions. People are going to notice. You are going to notice. You are going to feel it immediately. And sometimes that's all momentum really is, is feeling it, taking action, and building off of that. You don't need to make up for the last six months. You just need to decide that today, you're going to start creating momentum.

I hope you all have an amazing summer lined up. Please spend time being present, not worrying about the past or the future. Just be in the moment. And remember, it doesn't matter what the last six months look like. You get to choose today to create momentum in this moment, in this instant, by taking action and see how the next six months unfolds. Okay, I'll see you next week.
