Our Friend Failure

Failure has a bad reputation, but it's truly a gateway to growth and development. If we can learn to fail without losing momentum or confidence in ourselves, the possibilities are endless as to what can be achieved.

  1. Failure doesn’t exist - Let’s flip the script on failure to say that failure, as we know it, doesn’t exist. It doesn’t exist because in any situation where we are challenging ourselves, we either win or we learn. If we are putting ourselves in a position where failure is a possible outcome, it means we’re courageous, which is an automatic win.

  2. Failure is subjective - We get to decide what failure and success mean. It’s a story we make up in our mind and it doesn’t serve us unless we’re creating mini wins for ourselves.

  3. Failure makes us exponentially better - If you’re willing to fail with the intention to learn from it, the trajectory of what you'll be able to create will be ten fold. Science shows that frustration (from failure) actually cues particular brain areas to be more alert so you have a heightened level of focus and creativity next time.

Question: Learn from each failed attempt and get 10x better by evaluating them. Ask yourself;

What went well?

What didn’t go well?

What will I do differently next time?

Action: This week, evaluate your most recent or favorite failure using the questions above. What did you learn?

💜  a good quote…

“Failure should be our teacher, not our undertaker. Failure is delay, not defeat. It is a temporary detour, not a dead end. Failure is something we can avoid only by saying nothing, doing nothing, and being nothing.” - Denis Waitley

“We must commit to learning from our mistakes, rather than beating ourselves up, or we’re destined to make the same mistakes again in the future…The key is that when you do run aground, instead of beating yourself up for being such a “failure,” remember that there are no failures in life. There are only results. If you didn’t get the results you wanted, learn from this experience so that you have references about how to make better decisions in the future.” - Tony Robbins, Awaken the Giant Within
